CERTINA and Fabio Leimer, GP2 driver
CERTINA is proud to continue lending its support to the young Fabio Leimer, one of Switzerland's greatest motorsport talents, for the 2012 racing season. The CERTINA logo will be emblazoned on Leimer's GP2 racing car, helmet and overalls also this year. CERTINA has proved its flair for engaging young sportsmen on several occasions in the past – many such individuals developed into international sporting greats during the course of the partnership.
Fabio Leimer was born on 17 April 1989 in Bettlach, Switzerland. He entered the Swiss go-karting scene at the age of 11 and was placed sixth overall in the Mini category in his very first year. Only one year later, he won the Swiss Championship in the Super Mini category. Between 2002 and 2004, he won the Swiss Championship twice and finished second overall once. This secured his promotion to the top tier and the ICA and Fabio concluded the year in eighth place in the Swiss Championship. In 2006, Leimer continued to drive in the ICA class, earned second place overall and also battled his way through the Formula BMW ADAC to fourth place in the Rookie Championship. The following year, he moved to the Renault 2000 category and into the Swiss Jenzer Motorsport Team. In the Italian Championship, he achieved two podium places in the same season. In 2008, Leimer continued to compete for the Jenzer Motorsport Team in the international Formula Master series, taking three race wins and more podium places and securing second place overall for the season. He also won the Rookie Award in that same year. In the 2009 season, he took six race wins and two second places in the same category, and claimed the championship title. In 2010, the young Swiss moved over to GP2 and the Ocean Racing Team. The season got off to a great start with a win in Barcelona, but the team was plagued by a number of technical problems through the rest of the calendar. Leimer started the 2011 season with the Italian Rapax Team and was again able to record a victory in Barcelona. After a mixed season, he finished 14th in the GP2 Championship. In mid-November, Fabio won the GP2 race (not counted for championship standings) held as part of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. The same month, during Young Driver Days, Leimer had his first Formula 1 tryouts, with some test runs in the Sauber F1 Team C30 racer. His performance was outstanding and he finished in 4th place.
Fabio will compete the 2012 GP2 season as part of the Racing Engineering Team.
With Fabio Leimer, CERTINA is backing another talented young racing driver with a very promising career path. The GP2 series is well known as the route of choice into Formula 1. Over the years, CERTINA has been associated with sporting greats such as Thomas Lüthi, Alex Crivillé, Robert Kubica and many others, providing support at a time when they were virtually unknown. Most of these individuals developed into successful international sporting personalities in the major motorsport series during the course of the partnership.
